Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the difference between 2D, 3D & 4D Ultrasound?

2D Ultrasound is the traditional and original method of viewing a baby’s development & skeletal features. This method has been used in the medical field for many years to check prenatal progress & health. 3D Ultrasound uses more advanced technology & software to provide surface imagery views of your baby in great detail, capturing what is now referred to as 3D photography or Dimensional Photography. Ultrasound is carried out by delivering sound waves through the body. Normally they sound waves are pointed in one direction. 3D & 4D ultrasounds are done in the same manner, except that the waves are not sent in a straight direction. They are pointed from various different angles around the fetus. These different angles permit a three-dimensional still photo to be imaged.

4D or HD-Live Real Time imagery uses the same frequency of sound waves as traditional 2D ultrasound. 4D is short for Four-Dimensional, the 4th dimension being time. 3D ultrasound is produced by taking multiple 2D images and creating a 3D image. These 3D images are then put back to back in a fast manner by an advanced computer software system to create a 4D Real Time Ultrasound Movie of the baby with exceptional resolution.

What is an Elective Ultrasound?

YK Baby Inc offers elective 2D, 3D & 4D HD Live Non-Medical, Non-Diagnostic Dimensional Ultrasound Scans to provide a unique bonding experience for the mother, father & family members with your unborn baby. We believe that realistic 3D/4D viewing of your baby provides a connection between the parents and the baby that can be a positive beneficial experience for the whole family. YK Baby Inc makes no claims that any 2D/3D/4D imaging at our facility should be used in any way as a substitute for medical imaging to assess the health of your baby. Elective Ultrasound can only complement, not replace a 2D Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound through your Medical Health Provider.

You do not need a referral from a Doctor. These Elective photos are not covered by your insurance. You do however have to be currently followed by a Physician. ( ie Family Doctor, Obstetrician or Pediatrician) & you must confirm that you have already had a Medical Diagnostic Ultrasound that has been ordered through you Physician prior to booking an appointment at YK Baby Inc. You must indicate your gestation in weeks & your due date as provided by your Physician.

What should I wear?

Please wear comfortable clothing & remember we will need to access your abdomen for the scan so separate top & bottom will work best.

Can I find out the Gender of my Baby?

Yes, if requested & visible. You must be 20+ weeks gestation in order to qualify for gender determination. If you do not wish to know the gender, please indicate this to us at the start of your session. We will always respect your wishes. Please be aware that sometimes gender is revealed during the scan based on babies movements which are uncontrollable. YK Baby Inc apologizes in advance if such an incident inadvertently occurs.

Are the images safe to produce & are there any risks to me or my baby?

When it comes to safety, there is no difference between 3D/4D & traditional 2D ultrasound because both methods use the same kind of sound waves. Ultrasound was first introduced for clinical diagnosis in 1942 by an Austrian psychiatrist and neurologist Karl Dussik, This technology has been successfully used on pregnant women since the early 1960’s. Extensive studies over the last 50 years have found that ultrasound, under normal use has not been shown to cause any harm to mother or baby. Routine scanning of all pregnancies by health care providers is now normal throughout Canada & most of the World. 3D/4D scans use exactly the same type & intensity of ultrasound as conventional 2D scanning. 3D & 4D Ultrasound both utilize sound waves to look inside the body. This technology is similar to radar. A specialized probe is placed on the body & emits sound waves while listening for their return echo and generates an image. 3D & 4D Ultrasound will be similar to a conventional 2D scan in terms of exposure.
For Standard diagnostic or non-diagnostic ultrasound, there are no known harmful effects to humans.

Who will perform my scan?

YK Baby Inc employs a fully certified 2D/3D/4D Non-Medical, Non-Diagnostic Ultrasound Imaging Specialist.

What are some preparations before my scan?

The week leading up to your scan you should drink plenty of water. Please wear a loose fitting two-piece outfit as your abdomen will need to be exposed for the scan. If you want, you can consume some fruit juice or sugary treat about 15-30 minutes prior to your appointment as this will assist in the baby’s movements ( unless this has been contraindicated by your Physician ).

What if my baby is camera shy?

If on the rare occasion the position of your baby during the scan is such that gender determination and or satisfactory 3D/4D imaging is difficult to achieve, we may ask you to walk around or change positions on the bed before resuming the scan. In the rare event that your baby is still camera shy, you will be offered a complimentary re-scan visit on an alternate date ( within 1-3 weeks ). Only one re-booking will be provided for the 3D Visit with Baby & the HD Baby Packages. If the sonographer feels they are unable to obtain the best possible images during your first visit & if, after two attempts on different dates, the 3rd visit will be at the regular rate for a booking. Payment will be due in full after the first visit & you will be given a free re-booking within 1-3 weeks.

Will I always get a beautiful photo of my baby?

In this environment & setting, Baby is Boss!! YK Baby Inc will always make every effort possible to get the best possible images obtainable during your session, but every baby will scan differently depending on its gestational age, it’s position, the amount of fluid present and the mother’s condition. Sometimes the baby is persistently facing downwards or back ( ie towards your spine ) or if the hands and feet or umbilical cord are covering the face, it may be difficult to achieve facial imagery, and if this happens we may ask you to take a little walk around in order to get baby moving. If after re-positioning efforts the desired results are not achieved, and if the sonographer is not happy with the images or footage obtained for you, then we will re-book a complimentary scan at a later date ( 3D Visit with Baby & HD Baby Packages only). YK Baby Inc makes no promises that the images will be similar to those you might have seen elsewhere or even from our own facility, or that we can always meet everyone’s expectations; however, we promise to make every effort to obtain optimal images of the baby where possible.

Will I always get a perfect 3D Face Image?

The best facial images are obtained later in your pregnancy. A good picture of the babies face is very often obtained but not guaranteed. The Baby’s position, the amount of fluid, hands/cord around the face and maternal habitus can interfere with images of the face. We book our clients with ample time slots to ensure that we spend enough time with each client. If the baby’s face is completely hidden throughout the session, we will re-book you for free at a later date to obtain the possible missing images. Full payment is due at the end of the first session.

The clarity of 3D images depends on many factors which are not controllable but could have an impact on image quality. First and foremost is the baby’s position. If the baby is facing towards mom’s spine it will be virtually impossible to get face shots. However, we will make every effort possible & work with you to hopefully change the baby’s position during the session. This is why it is very important to be well hydrated in the days & weeks leading up to your scan. The thickness of adipose tissue & position of the placenta between the ultrasound probe and baby’s face also plays a very important role in image quality, since the sound wave weakens as it travels through tissue.

If the baby is very active the image can become blurry, the quality of the 3D images could be affected but the movement also helps in capturing different poses and gets rid of obscuring structures.

It is virtually impossible to give you an answer over the phone about the quality of 3D Images your will receive. Clients need to be scanned in order to fully know the position of the baby as well as the position of the placenta, the amount of amniotic fluid & the location of the cords & limbs.

Do I need a full bladder?

You do not need a full uncontrollable bladder. You can drink fluid to hydrate as normal and empty your bladder when need be. If your bladder fills & is uncomfortable during the scan, you can easily void & return.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes, an appointment is necessary & advance booking ( 1-2 weeks) is preferred. Appointment availability will be updated frequently. YK Baby Inc will do it’s absolute best to accommodate your schedule but we have only so many appointments available & they fill quickly. A Doctor’s referral is not necessary. Our services should not be taken as an alternative to the complete medical diagnostic ultrasound ordered by your medical practitioner & these sessions are for a keepsake, personal & social purposes only.

When will I receive my images & recordings?

You will have all your images & videos on a CD or USB a few minutes after your session.

Can family & friends some with me to my appointment?

YK Baby Inc promotes a family bonding experience & are happy to let your loved ones take part in this special event. We can comfortably seat 3 adults in the studio. Please remember to have cell phones set to airplane mode or turned off. Picture or video taken on your cell phone is not permitted. You are more than welcome to share any pictures you receive from YK Baby Inc after your scan with family & friends.

Will any measurements be taken of the baby to determine due date?

I am having twins. Is there an additional fee?

No, we do not charge extra for twins. However, we do recommence that you select a package that allows adequate time to spend with each fetus. Ideally 30 minutes or more. Imaging of twins is a bit more challenging so the additional time will provide useful in obtaining the best possible images. For optimal imaging, your session should be between 22-28 weeks. This will hopefully provide the best window to produce adequate images of each baby
